Initially formed by four of the seven Rioja valleys, (those through which the rivers Iregua, Leza, Cidacos and Alhama run), Valles de Sadacia is currently in the process of widening the area it recognises to include virtually the whole of La Rioja. The name of these ancient valleys dates from pre-Roman times and later became corrupted into that of the river Cidacos, a tributary of the Ebro. These in turn give their name to the geographical indication of origin of fine white wines from La Rioja; Vino de la Tierra Valles de Sadacia.
The different sub-zones of La Rioja, with clearly differentiated climatic conditions, are perfect for growing white varieties. Grapes such as Muscat a Petits grains, Chardonnay or Verdejo, bring out their full potential in the lower reaches of the valley, next to the river Ebro, where there is less rainfall and the vines receive more sun. Other varieties from colder, damper regions, such as Albarino, Riesling or Gewurztraminer, have adapted better to the higher slopes, where they can grow in ideal conditions.
